$25,000 – $35,000 a year – Part-time, Permanent
Position Summary:

The Principal is responsible to the Board of the Richmond Music School Society (RMS), a non profit music school, for the overall operation of the School including registration, programming, reception and financial operations. Provides strategic leadership in all aspects of the School’s activities. Acts as liaison between the Board, Faculty, Membership, General Public and Office Staff. Is responsible for increasing the public profile of the School and encouraging growth in student enrolment.

Position Duties:

  • In conjunction with the Board, designs the program and curriculum for the School.
  • Is responsible for all financial operations of the School in conjunction with the treasurer.
  • Develops and maintains effective public relations in the community with organizations such as schools, businesses, the City of Richmond and other Music Schools. Issues press releases and attends speaking engagements on behalf of the School.
  • Liaises between the Board, Faculty, membership and the general public regarding a variety of RMS issues. Assists the Board and its committees to implement programs.
  • In conjunction with the Board, determines staffing requirements, recruits and recommends hiring of new staff members. Develops guidelines for faculty duties. Ensures hiring documentation is complete prior to start. Coordinates work of volunteers.
  • In conjunction with the Faculty, coordinates Faculty and Student concerts, determining dates, location and program content.
  • Negotiates concert dates and contracts with facilities as required.
  • Facilitates and encourages Faculty to practice and promote creative music excellence.
  • Supervises the office staff by scheduling and coordinating work assignments and evaluating performance.
  • Coordinates fund raising activities with the assistance of the Board’s fund-raising committee.
  • Ensures grant applications are completed and submitted to various funding agencies in a timely fashion and in accordance with the agencies’ requirement.
  • Attends Board meetings and serves on various committees at the request of the Board.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Education, Training and Experience

Bachelor of Music (Masters of Music preferred) plus at least 5 years Teaching experience, with 5 years administrative experience in a “non profit” Society, preferably in the Arts.
